Z-Post 4 Rope System & WRGT-FL
The NCHRP 350 tested Z-Post System and Wire Rope Gating Terminal - Flared (WRGT-FL) utilize a Z shaped post design. Tested to TL-4 on flat grade, it's considered by FHWA to be a TL-3 compliant system when placed on slopes up to 4:1 or flatter. The top rope rests in a slot while the 3 lower woven ropes are positioned at 6" intervals using plastic pegs. The friction from the weave keeps the ropes at design heights, while the force of an impact increases the post/rope friction coefficient resulting in predictable deflections regardless of anchor spacing. Since no hardware connects the ropes to the post it eases maintenance/repairs and results in fewer parts to assemble and inventory.

The Z-Post system is a high-tension median or roadside cable barrier system successfully tested to TL-4 and TL-3 on flat grade and to TL-3 on a 4:1 slope per FHWA Eligibility Letters HSA-10/B-82B, B82-B1 and B-82D. The Length of Need (LON) consists of Galvanized Steel Z-Posts, also called Line Posts, which are placed in socketed concrete foundations or driven steel sockets.
The top rope rests in a slot in the top of the post and the three bottom ropes alternate post sides, while resting on plastic pegs. Line posts also have a plastic excluder and post cap with a reflector attached at required intervals per agency requirements. The woven rope design improves system performance and ease of maintenance while providing predictable deflections regardless of length between terminals.
Wire Rope Gating Terminal (WRGT-FL)
NCHRP 350 TL-3
Brifen's WRGT-FL flared terminal is crashworthy per FHWA Letter HSSD/CC-86B. It can be located anywhere within the clear zone and has all ropes anchored into one foundation. The WRGT-FL end terminal is made up of four posts with an overall length of 28ft and includes a large concrete foundation (drilled shaft or spread footer) that is offset 2ft away from the nearest traffic.
Site specific soil analysis by a Professional Engineer is imperative for proper foundation sizing to prevent anchor movement and provide adequate factor of safety when rope tension increases at lower temperatures.
